The city that is found in the Mesilla Valley, between the Organ Mountains and a wide-open desert is the Las Cruces New Mexico. It is a fast growing community that has a bright future; in fact it is the fastest growing city in New Mexico. It was Don Juan de Onate who led the first colonists to Las Cruces New Mexico in 1598, and has been the home for many people since then. Its surroundings boast of agriculture like pecans, onions and chilies; however, it is most famous for the best-tasting green chili in the world. Las Cruces of New Mexico now boasts of a vast selection of annual events and attractions in an atmosphere of 360 days of sunshine the year round.
It was following the World War in 1946 that Las Cruces was incorporated as a city. Since then Las Cruces has grown into a city that boasts of shopping, recreation and sporting activities. The local shops and boutiques here sell a wide range of authentic native goods like hand-woven rugs and blankets, baskets, jewelry, pottery, paintings and woodcarvings. However, the best shopping her is done at the open-air Farmer's and Craft Market on the Downtown Mall that is held each Wednesday and Saturday morning. The Branigan Cultural Center Complex is the headquarters of many artistic and entertaining endeavors. It is developed into two distinct museums, the Museum of Fine Art and Culture, and the Historical Museum. There are also the New Mexico State University Williams Hall and the Corbett Center, which displays archaeological and historical exhibits.
Las Cruces proves to be paradise to the golf players with their numerous golf courses. There are also many parks, playgrounds, soccer fields, softball fields, tennis and handball courts, swimming pools and recreation centers for the outdoor oriented people. For those who are interested in bowling and roller-skating, all one has to do is to head down to the Sun Lanes Bowling Alley and Tommy's Las Cruces Roller Rink. And of course, movie buffs can head to the city's Allen movie theaters to catch a couple of movies! Hiking and camping facilities are also accessible within a short drive, for those interested in such activities.
Those who are scientifically inclined should go to the Space Center which features the International Hall of Fame and IMAX theater and planetarium. If you are interested in Mexican goods, all you have to do is to cross the border on the El Paso-Juarez border as the border is within 60 miles of Las Cruces. Of course, there are a variety of restaurants for the food lover; Italian, Oriental, American and fast food restaurants provide a large choice for the food lover. Rodeo and western dancing comes in next in line when all the eating is over, with of course the Way Out West BrewPub offering a microbrewery and a nightclub for the night birds.
