Winter Sports in New Mexico

New Mexico prides itself to have one of the most spectacular areas dedicated to Winter Sports. New Mexico skiing has become the favourite vacation time for many Americans.

Strangely enough the most recommended months for skiing in New Mexico are March and April, as this is the time with the heaviest snow fall. I don't recommend visiting New Mexico ski resorts in this period, as the skiing areas will most likely be closed, due to the shortage of visitors. The best time for skiing remains the winter period, or if you are in a hurry late November.

The history of New Mexico skiing is taken very seriously by the authorities. In Taos for example there are a few skiing areas where snowboarding is forbidden. This is done in order to preserve the more conservative look of the area. The refuse to embrace a change such as the snowboard shouldn't be misinterpreted. This is only an attempt to preserve some traditions and to avoid alienating some of the skiers who come to these places for decades. The amount of ski areas is enough though to satisfy anyone, so even if you prefer a snowboard you can make sure that you will find the ski area of your dreams.

Another thing you should watch for especially if you come from a city found at the sea level is that the change of altitude can have quite some dizzying effects. It is very important to follow an adjustment period and always take care to drink some extra water. There are no rules on what the adjustment period's length should be as any individual has its own different pace.

Sun is also very powerful at high altitudes, so please make sure that you get the appropriate sunscreen protection. Protective glasses are also a must if you want to get the best out of your skiing experience in New Mexico.

Another unique feature offered to skiers in New Mexico is the possibility to do some cross country. There are two courses available for such skiers: the Enchanted Forest located outside Red River and the Valles Caldera National Preserve located outside of Los Alamos.

With all these conditions it is always advisable to book in advance especially if you plan going on a weekend vacation. The crowds can get quite large. Also if you plan some New Mexico skiing please make sure that you choose the appropriate skiing area. This state truly has something to offer to anybody, but it's your responsibility to find the ski area of your dreams.
