New Mexico Travel Is A Biker's Paradise.
Long Straight Highways With Very Low Traffic Can Really Make You Push The Pedal To The Metal.
The roads themselves are not exactly standard issue, as many of them are unpaved. The heat of the New Mexico and the lack of rain is enough to keep them usable.
If the travel by road is not exactly your choice, the highway system is very well organized and will help you reach most of the locations rather easily. Further still New Mexico has quite a large number of airports if speed is of the essence. Most important cities have one including Santa Fe, Alburquerque and obviously Las Vegas.
What you must always remember when you travel in the state of New Mexico is that nature is the real king here. You can go miles on end without ever meeting anyone and the state's forests cover about a quarter of its territories making New Mexico roughly the state with highest amount of forest area. Combine this with the heat of the desert and you will get the image of a largely wild area, one of the last outposts where nature still dominates everything. At times the human habitats seem only a feeble attempt to conquer the wild landscape.
Perhaps this the reason for which the most famous American road ever used to pass this state. I am talking of course about Route 66. The sensation of pure freedom and the subculture that was born in this area cannot have been taken place anywhere else. The roads of New Mexico are I think the most unlikely place to ever create a cultural revolution. There are places in this world where Jack Kerouac is more appreciated than George Washington. This is because the freedom offered by these roads is much purer and less controversial than that preached by the American Constitution. There was no slavery and no death penalty on Route 66, only a route to inner peace and great wild spaces.
Altogether the experience of New Mexico travel is something that everyone should experience at least once in their lifetime. The Moslems have to do the Haj, the road to Mecca, Americans must experience what their freedom is all about. The bright sky of New Mexico is waiting to be discovered and it hides more spiritual beauty than any cathedral could. So dare to make this step and take a ride into freedom.
